Mujeres at the Mic!

Mujeres at the Mic!
A reading by Nuyorican Women Writers

What is a Nuyorican? Are any of them women? This reading discusses what it means to be a woman in the Nuyorican literary movement and poetry performance scene from Loisaida, El Barrio, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and beyond by featuring the work of four prominent, intergenerational New York City-based poets at different stages of their careers. With their defiant and oftentimes nostalgic expressions in English, Spanish, and Spanglish, these mujeres have secured their spot in Nuyorican history.

Maria Rodriguez-Morales is a poet, writer, and curator. She is the author of Brooklyn’s Daughter. Maria was recognized by the Academy of American Poets in spring 2015. She is a cowriter, coproducer, and cast member of Soledad Speaks, a theatrical spoken word play.

Nancy Mercado is the editor of the Nuyorican Women Writers anthology. A guest curator for the Museum of American Poetics and assistant editor for, she authored It Concerns the Madness and edited the youth anthology If the World Were Mine. Mercado’s work is extensively anthologized.

Vanessa Chica Ferreira is a New York City writer and performance poet. She began sharing her poetry in the summer of 2013. Her work appears in the anthologies, No Apologies, Full Circle, and Letras & Nuyorican Women Writers Vol 2.
